The first steps for professionals entering the job market after the recent tech layoffs.

With large-scale company layoffs already occurring this year, we want to share a message with those who may be feeling uncertain as they begin an unexpected job search.

Some professionals are comfortable changing roles every 1 to 3 years and have built careers around that rhythm. Others, however, have spent 5, 10, even 15 or more years with the same organization. If you fall into the latter group, this transition may feel especially unfamiliar and we hope the insights below provide clarity, confidence, and direction as you navigate this next chapter.

Before diving into our top three best practices for today's job market, start with this: take a breath. The landscape has evolved, but it is navigable when approached strategically.

Here's a practical game plan to help you move forward with intention and confidence.

1) Update Your Resume for 2026 Standards

What constitutes a strong resume has evolved significantly over the years. Today, clarity, impact, and measurable value matter more than ever.

Best Practices:

  • Two pages maximum. Even if your career spans decades, focus on the most relevant and impactful experience.

  • Quantify results. Highlight efficiency gains, revenue impact, cost savings, scalability improvements, risk reduction, or performance increases.

  • Emphasize outcomes over responsibilities. Hiring managers want to understand what contributions your work made.

  • Remove outdated technologies and minimize early career roles that no longer support your current positioning.

The difference is specificity, ownership, and measurable impact.

2) Optimize LinkedIn (It's No Longer Optional)

LinkedIn is now one of the primary channels through which recruiters and hiring managers identify talent. Your profile should reinforce your resume, however it should not repeat it.

Take these steps immediately:

  • Upload a recent, professional headshot.

  • Craft a headline that reflects the role you want, not just the title you held.

3) Don't Rely on Applications Alone

Online applications alone yield low response rates. The majority of opportunities still materialize through relationships and referrals.

Take a proactive approach:

  • Connect with a Rise Hire recruiter! We genuinely welcome the conversation, and we also recommend you broaden your network. Ideally, maintain relationships with 3 to 5 reputable recruiters who specialize in your space. We highly recommend seeking introductions from trusted sources.

  • Reconnect with your network, even if it feels awkward!

    • Reach out to former colleagues, leaders, vendors, clients, and industry peers. A simple, professional note is sufficient.

This is simply a starting point, a foundation to help you move forward with clarity and momentum. We'll be sharing additional practical guidance (including interview preparation best practices) and insights in the coming weeks to support you throughout your search.

In the meantime, if you'd like to connect directly, we welcome the conversation. Please feel free to visit our website to learn more and reach out. We're here to help you navigate this transition with strategy and confidence.
